2020  Fall Poker Run

 photo
On Sunday, October 25th members of the Chesapeake Region, AACA, together with members of the local Chapters of the Early Ford V8 Club and Vintage Chevrolet Club of America assembled at the Mt. Carmel Road Park & Ride to begin the ever-popular Fall Poker Run through the scenic back roads of nearby Baltimore County and Carroll County.

The early morning clouds and occasional rain did not deter the enthusiastic participants arriving by 10 am, eager to hit the designated trail, looking for the answers to the carefully crafted clues developed by our 2020 Poker Run organizers: Phil and Shelly Hack, Al Zimmermann and Nancy Mattheu.

As each participating vehicle was about to depart, each team drew their first Poker Card.

With the "Driver" operating the vehicle, it was up to the "Navigator" to call out driving directions and questions -- as well as record answers on the Question/Answer Sheet. Participants also were asked to record total mileage traveled as well as the number of times their team backtracked looking for a missed item.

After 70-plus miles of travel, and likely many shouts of "slow down", "we must have missed it" and "let's turn around" our intrepid travelers ended at the last stop: Gary's Garage, at the home of Chesapeake Region President Paula Ruby and husband Gary.

Al and Nancy greeted arriving drivers and navigators at the garage entrance and retrieved the team's completed Question/Answer Sheet.

Once inside everyone wandered the area, admiring all the automotive-themed displays and selecting a table for eating.

At the garage front, a projector was positioned to later review every Poker Run question and show photo proof of the correct answers.

At the garage rear, tables were stocked with all kinds of food to be consumed by the hungry travellers.

Lots of cookies and several jugs of cider were available for dessert.

Attendees selected their seats for the food and program.

The fried chicken, potato salad and slaw was just waiting for the word to "dig in"

Everyone was sharing the garage with Gary's prized 1955 Chevrolet Belair 2-door hardtop.

With food served, everyone relaxed and enjoyed a delicious meal.

As everyone completed their meal, Al determined Team Stershic: Mark and Mary, had the best poker hand and then began a review of the day's Poker Run route and the correct answers to the questions asked.

Team Ruby had the highest score: Colin Ruby, Shannon Ruby and friend Chris.

Runners-up were Team Stershic: Mark and Mary

With the 2020 Poker Run completed, and a great success despite many obstacles that needed to be overcome, Al finally relaxes and appears quite relieved. Major help to establish the route and develop the clues was provided by Phil and Shelley Hack.
Everyone can be proud of the succesful year 2020 Fall Poker Run that they produced.
